King Brothers Dairy, a family run dairy farm in the small town of Schuylerville, NY, was looking to replace the floor of their Farm Store that had previously been vinyl and was buckling and warping. The 3,200 sqft store floor sees foot-traffic year round, 7 days a week.
Recommended Systems
Polyset and floor contractor, Capital District Flooring, recommended the following systems based on meetings and site visit …
- Primer – Ply-Barrier – a specialty 100% solids epoxy coating system designed as a moisture vapor barrier for use over damp / wet concrete flooring applications. This was recommended due to concerns about potential moisture under the current concrete slab.
- Broadcast Coat – Ply-Guard EP – a flexible, two-component, low viscosity, 100% solids resin system used in a variety of flooring applications including high build and decorative applications.
- Top Coat –Ply-Guard AS (High Solids) – a reformulated high solids, low odor and fast curing two component polyaspartic coating system that can be applied directly to properly prepared concrete and is ideal for both interior and exterior applications.
- Ply-Guard AS was selected for a quick turnaround time so the store could reopen to the public as soon as possible, but also because of the odor sensitivity and providing a smooth, easy-to-clean surface.
Preparation
- Diamond grind and vacuum of the current substrate.
- Ply-Barrier was applied using a 3/16” notched squeegee to achieve the coverage rate of 100 sq. ft. per gallon and then back rolled with a 3/8” nap roller cover to even out the distribution leaving a dry film thickness of approximately 16 mils.
- Once Ply-Barrier was dry to touch, Ply-Guard EP was applied with squeegees. This layer included a full broadcast of Torginol flake, using Obsidian flake over a Boulder-colored base coat. After curing, the floor was scraped and vacuumed to remove loose flake and ensure an even surface.
- Finally, three (3) coats of Ply-Guard AS (High Solids) were applied using flat magic trowels and back rolled. The topcoat was installed on a Friday and available to be walked on by Saturday, offering a fast return to service.
“We recently switched to Polyset and have quickly become familiar with their line of products and systems”, says Pierre LaPort, Capital District Flooring.
“For this project, the Ply-Barrier was a no-brainer. It’s easy to work with. Their new low-odor, high solids polyaspartic I can’t recommend enough. For an indoor project like this, it was ideal for not only its features but to be able to provide the customer with a quick return to operation and no remaining odor.”
